Staying focused when working can be a real difficulty, especially while working from home. There are a lot of distractions that can catch your attention and keep you from being your productive self. Avoiding and overcoming distractions can be a constant challenge in your career. Here are some tips for avoiding distractions and becoming a more focused worker:
Set Boundaries
It’s pretty hard to complete a project quickly if you keep getting notifications or calls every few minutes. When you’re trying to focus on something put up some sort of “do not disturb” sign. This can be a physical sign on your office or home office door or simply turning off call, chat, and email notifications for a period of time. You can also notify your co-workers that you will be busy for a certain amount of time. This way, you will remain undisturbed for long enough to accomplish something.
Take a Short Break
Sometimes, forcing yourself to focus on a task can be counterproductive. If you find your focus stalling, take a short break. This can involve meditating, taking a walk, doodling, chatting with a co-worker, or briefly focusing on a mentally engaging activity. Taking a short break will help to refocus your thoughts and will allow you to be more productive.
Make your Work Public
If your work is never seen or checked up on by others, then what motivation do you have for completing your work? To improve your motivation to do work, share your work with others. Tell your co-workers or your boss what you’re working on and when it will be completed. This will give you the motivation of not wanting to disappoint others and give you a set deadline. If you are a remote worker, make sure you are showing your face on any virtual meetings and staying in contact with your supervisor. This will keep you responsible and motivated in your work.
Share this advice with your employees to help feel more focused and productive.
