This is exactly why it is important to support these managers, especially when they begin their leadership role. Often great employees are promoted to a management position because they do their job well, their peers respect them, and they show some promise in the area of managing people. But while these employees may be great at making widgets, they may not have the skills needed to be a great leader and motivate their employees. A recent study by Root, an Ohio based strategy execution company, found some startling statistics:

  • 32% of respondents don’t feel their company views managers as critical to success.
  • 69% report that senior leaders don’t believe in a strong link between effective manager training and business performance.
  • 83% report that less than a quarter of their training budget, if any, is currently allocated to manager training sustainment — which supports the dreary follow-up statistic that only 18% strongly feel their companies have been successful at sustainment so far.
