If you are concerned about the engagement of your employees, you may want to take a look at what you are doing to support your management team. In past blogs we have discussed the importance of good managers when it comes to employee engagement and how difficult it can be to find the right managers.
According to Gallup’s State of the American Manager, managers with high talent lead teams that achieve higher employee engagement, higher productivity and higher employee retention rates, and have more engaged customers and 48% higher profitability. Managers with high talent lead teams that achieve higher employee engagement, higher productivity and higher employee retention rates, and have more engaged customers and 48% higher profitability.
This is exactly why it is important to support these managers, especially when they begin their leadership role. Often great employees are promoted to a management position because they do their job well, their peers respect them, and they show some promise in the area of managing people. But while these employees may be great at making widgets, they may not have the skills needed to be a great leader and motivate their employees. A recent study by Root, an Ohio based strategy execution company, found some startling statistics:
- 32% of respondents don’t feel their company views managers as critical to success.
- 69% report that senior leaders don’t believe in a strong link between effective manager training and business performance.
- 83% report that less than a quarter of their training budget, if any, is currently allocated to manager training sustainment — which supports the dreary follow-up statistic that only 18% strongly feel their companies have been successful at sustainment so far.
If you are looking to move your company’s strategy forward and invest in some employee training and professional development, it might be wise to start with your management team, especially your front-line managers. It may be just the competitive advantage your company needs to attract and retain highly engaged and productive employees in every position.
