On January 31, 2020, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced there is a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification to be used by employers. This new version includes some minor changes to the form itself and to the instructions. Some of the changes include:
- Updates to some country names to reflect recent name changes when completing the fillable Form I-9 on a computer.
- Clarifications on what documents are acceptable for Form I-9 and who can act as an authorized representative on behalf of an employer.
- Updates to the process for requesting paper Forms I-9, the USCIS website addresses and the DHS Privacy Notice.
The notice states that employers should begin using this updated form as of January 31, 2020 but does provide time to make updates to forms and processes stating that employers may continue using the prior version of the form until April 30, 2020. After that date, the new version of the form is the only one that will be acceptable.
The Helpside Onboarding Tool will be updated with these changes prior to the deadline. If you are currently using paper forms for new employee onboarding, make sure to use the updated form no later than April 30, 2020.
